LockCrypt Editor's Review

Let me ask you a question: how many passwords should a person memorize nowadays? If I'm going say "just one", you might think that I'm using a single password (which is clearly not safe) to log on to my computer, the same to access several sites accounts and so on? Well, no, I'm using just a strong password to access a software which keeps all the other private stuff safe - LockCrypt.

LockCrypt is an easy-to-use password and information management software that will help you store all your important data securely, such as passwords, credit cards information, serial numbers and others. All the data is encrypted with a reliable password-based encryption method and the only way to access them is with a master password.

When you run LockCrypt for the first time, you will be prompted to select your language. Next, you'll have to choose the database mode (XML, SQLite, MySQL or Legacy), a database location, the encryption algorithm (AES, TwoFish, none) and a password. If you care only to access the information you're going to store in LockCrypt only from your local computer, select the database mode as XML.

To access the information from different location, select the databases mode as MySQL (and the other connection information related to this). Then, insert a password. That password will serve as an access key to the application. Make sure you insert a strong password. An ideal password should be long and should have letters, punctuation and numbers (special characters). However, it's not absolutely necessary to enter the password right now, you can do it later from LockCrypt's File menu, Change Password.

After that, you're going to step into the program main working zone. In the left side of the window, you should see a set of examples that are just to make it clear how to use the program. Watch each of them. In case you don't care about these example, simple modify, delete or replace them. The only thing I'm going to add about the main interface is the Password Generator. Use this tool to create passwords. You can customize the result the way you want to. However if you want to use uppercase and lowercase characters, digits or special characters - you can customize everything the way you want to.

Something that I really like is a function that will secure what you copy into your Clipboard. This works when you grab something with the "Copy field" button. Basically, the data you copy into the Clipboard is stored just for a short period of time and when the period is over, the data is purged. This way you can be sure no one will be able to retrieve the sensitive data you were working with in your Clipboard. You can enable this function from the program options.

Drawbacks / flaws:

In conclusion: In my opinion LockCrypt is a great piece of software with modern and great user interface. Use it to make sure you will never lose a password you need.
